Sophi's brother Alex was turning 3, and he loves cars. So we made him a racetrack cake! The "people" in the stands are Sixlet candies, the track is crushed Oreo cookies, the white squares and red barrier are fondant, and the grass is piped using a grass tip. Sophi contributed the racing flags and helped with car placement. :)

Made for a wonderful 6-year-old named Sophi's birthday. The cake is 3 layers, carved to the shape of a dress, with a center hole for Barbie. This is my third piano keyboard cake. For this one, I decided to step it up a notch and use rolled fondant over the keys to give it a smooth, clean look. The black keys are made of miniature Charleston Chews. The display box, designed to look like a grand piano, was made out of foam board and cardboard, and painted black with nontoxic tempera paint. Three different types of cupcakes fill the box.

Another "cake that looks like meat" project... large and small Ikura roll cakes! The cake part of this project was very simple, but creating the nori (seaweed wrap) and ikura (salmon roe) presented more of a challenge.There's already an ikura sushi cake tutorial on the Internet, and I followed the same basic principles but tweaked mine to make it look more like an actual piece of ikura sushi.

I made this hat based on the "Swell" hat pattern from Knitty.com for my friend Vichu. Since the pattern calls for Cascade yarn but I wanted something softer, I ended up using double strands of a bamboo/alpaca blend and larger needles than the pattern called for. The wave chart as printed comes out a little pointy, so I tweaked that slightly to make the waves appear more rounded. Success!

I recently added a fun element to my day job: Drawing a monthly IT-themed cartoon for publication in our PDF calendar download feature. Check out the October edition. November's calendar is in production now, and I think that cartoon looks a lot more professional. I'll post a link when it becomes available.

I'm not really into babies, but I love knitting baby stuff. Here's a hat modified from the "umbilical cord hat" in the Stitch 'N Bitch book and a Debbie Bliss sweater. The Debbie Bliss pattern book and yarn were freaking expensive, so it's a good thing this one turned out pretty well.

I am such a dork. Chris and I went to see Jeff Corwin in Plymouth last weekend, and the night before I decided that I should knit Jeff one of my animal hats. The hat was really cool in my opinion -- a soft, warm navy silk, cashmere, wool blend (I think?), with a lighter blue snake winding across the front. At the event, lots of kids got to go up on stage and hold big snakes, porcupines, etc.

On May 7 & 8, I sold some knit things and jewelry at "Cafe Crista" (Christina & Ed's house) during the Somerville open studios. These probably won't impress experienced jewelry makers, but I'm pretty happy with the way they turned out. The necklace is made with beads I got by cannibalizing an old strand of wooden beads and some clay and bamboo beads I bought in Providence, RI. Also, there are some seed beads from somewhere in Colorado.The amethyst glass stuff was a gift for my mom.

Recently, I have been experimenting with some beaded jewelry. I like how these flat bronze beads look somewhat like pebbles. The necklace turned out to be more pretty than functional, however, because the two strands keep twisting together. I haven't figured out how to fix it... although one bead shop employee suggested that "more beads!" was the solution.
